Bat Wings

In anime culture, bat wings are the most important symbol of the night. These leathery, membranous wings are different from the feathery, angelic ones that suggest purity. They make it clear right away that a character has a darker side. They are a common trait of demons, vampires, and succubi, and they give character designs an amazing jagged, edgy look. You will often see them with gothic clothes, horns, and tails to give them a monster-like look.

Artists like to mess with the shape of these wings. They could be tiny and cute on a chibi devil character, or huge and scary, taking up the whole width of the wallpaper. The skin between the finger-like bones is only partly see-through, which makes for some really cool lighting effects, especially when the moon or magical energy shines through it. Bat wings give a sense of danger and mystery that feathers just can not match, whether they are attached to a powerful demon lord or a naughty vampire girl.
