Epaulettes
In anime character design, an epaulette is the ultimate shortcut to conveying authority, rank, and discipline. An epaulette is an ornamental shoulder piece, originally used in historical European military uniforms to hold shoulder belts in place and denote an officer's rank. When an artist adds epaulettes to a character's outfit, they are immediately signaling that the character belongs to an organized hierarchy—usually a military force, a royal guard, a police unit, or a very prestigious, aristocratic academy.
Anime creators love using epaulettes because they add a massive amount of structure and prestige to a silhouette. In series like Mobile Suit Gundam or Code Geass, you'll see sharp, rigid shoulder boards adorned with stars and stripes to denote rank and faction. On the more fantastical side, series like Revolutionary Girl Utena use massive, highly stylized epaulettes with drooping fringe to create a romantic, "prince-like" aesthetic. Giving a character heavy, gold-fringed epaulettes usually implies they are a high-ranking commander, a villainous dictator, or a charismatic royal. Conversely, simple, flat shoulder straps are often used for grunts or standard tactical uniforms.
From a visual composition standpoint, epaulettes are incredibly useful for broadening a character's shoulders, making them look more imposing and physically dominant. They also introduce a great opportunity for contrast—pairing shiny gold fringe or intricate metallic embroidery against a dark blue, black, or crimson military coat creates an eye-catching focal point.
