Reading

Giving a character a book to hold is an old anime character design trick. Reading immediately establishes the character's personality—quiet, smart, introverted, or hiding something. The Japanese word for reading, dokusho (読書), is a significant subgenre in anime fanart. Yuki Nagato from Haruhi Suzumiya and Shizuku from Hunter x Hunter are almost like their books.

The mood affects the reading tag's appearance. Artists can create cozy spaces with books. Libraries with tall, dusty bookshelves and cafes with characters lost in books and coffee will be frequent. The windows let in afternoon sun, and a desk lamp helps me study at night. Fanart is more relaxing than action shots because the pose makes a character appear relaxed.

Not only slice-of-life scenes use the tag. Fantasy and magical girl anime reading is different. Huge, fancy grimoires floating in the air, characters deciphering old runic texts, and magic-powered spellbooks. Reading wallpapers, depicting students studying for tests or mages learning forbidden knowledge, are some of the most detailed and atmospheric anime art.
