Scar
Scars are one of the most potent narrative devices that character designers in anime use. These scars may range from a single, sharp cut on the face to a multitude of scars on the body that speak of the character's history with combat. Note the use of the scar to create the silhouette or direct the viewer's eye to a particular expression.
The visual style often includes bold lines and textured shading to give the impression that the character's history is imprinted on the skin. Character designers also make use of lighting and shadows to accentuate the depth of the scar, especially when drawing the character in a dramatic close-up portrait. Of course, let's not forget the fact that a scar immediately gives the character an edge that fans adore.
