Undershirts are the best sign of free time in anime. A character is off the clock when they remove their armor, magical girl dress, or school uniform and put on an undershirt. This clothing tag shows fans quiet, private moments that the main story rarely shows. It usually occurs during morning routines, intense training montages, or lazy weekend episodes when everyone is at home. When a character is in underwear, we see their true self, not their public persona.

Artists enjoy using this boring clothing. A tight tank top is almost required for male characters in shounen training arcs to show off their muscles and add drama with sweat after a battle. However, female characters in big undershirts or simple camisoles make the room cozy and vulnerable. They usually have messy hair, a toothbrush in their mouth, or morning sunlight through the blinds. Because the cotton fabric is so plain, the artist must focus on lighting, body language, and natural folds to make the picture stand out.
