White Skirt
White skirts are one of the most deliberate color choices for anime characters. White symbolizes purity, innocence, and angelic or untouchable presence in Japanese culture and anime. A white skirt completely changes a character's appearance. Different from winter school uniforms' dark blue or black pleated skirts, a white skirt makes the character's lower half look lighter immediately, creating a bright, airy silhouette.
Different styles of this tag are common. Summer school (natsu-fuku) uniforms are most common. To indicate that it is hot and casual, female characters wear light, breezy white skirts in beach or summer festival episodes. Doctors, priestesses, and "Ojou-sama" (rich, refined) characters in fantasy and science fiction wear white skirts. Asuna from Sword Art Online and other magical girls look graceful and calm in battle due to their clean white fabric against busy backgrounds and glowing magic effects.
Creatively drawing a white skirt is difficult. Because fabric has no base color, artists must shade folds, pleats, and lighting with soft blues, purples, or warm oranges. High-level rendering makes these wallpapers look clean, bright, and refreshing on a desktop.
