Goddess of Victory: NIKKE
Goddess of Victory: NIKKE is a mobile third-person shooter that tricks players by showing them viral jiggle physics and rear-view camera angles in ads, but then drops them into a very scary post-apocalyptic war story. Alien machines called Raptures wiped out all of humanity, and now people live underground in the Ark, where they send out "Nikkes," cybernetic female soldiers who are both the only hope for humanity and the most hated outcasts in society. You control up to five Nikkes, each with their own weapons and Burst skills. You take cover to reload while shooting through waves of enemies. But the story is shockingly dark, dealing with memory loss, dehumanization, PTSD, and the ethics of treating synthetic beings as disposable weapons. The writing is as good as that of serious visual novels. The game makes you feel strange because it mixes high-energy combat and polished fan service with the sad truth that soldiers are seen as disposable tools. It's mostly a story about getting to know characters who society sees as nothing more than weapons.
