Jujutsu Kaisen

When you mix horror elements and real violence into the shounen formula, you get Jujutsu Kaisen. Yuji Itadori is a super athletic high school student who swallows a cursed finger, which is basically a rotting relic, to save his friends. This makes him the host for Ryomen Sukuna, the most dangerous Curse in history. This isn't your typical "save the world with friendship" story. It's about sorcerers fighting Curses that come from all the bad things people have done, and the show is obsessed with the idea of getting a "proper death" in a job where most people die in horrible ways. The power system is very complex, with "Domain Expansions" that change reality in ways that are beautiful to look at but are really just ways to trap and overwhelm enemies. What makes it different is how willing it is to break the rules and kill off characters you thought were safe. This drives home the point that in this world of exorcists and curses, not everyone gets saved and happy endings aren't guaranteed.
