Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai

"Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai" turns the typical high school romance on its head in every way possible. It is based on the idea that love is a geopolitical espionage thriller in which the first person to confess loses. Miyuki Shirogane and Kaguya Shinomiya, both geniuses and leaders of the student council, are so proud that they can't move. They are also madly in love with each other. They're not trying to be romantic; instead, they're playing 4D chess Mash Games to get each other to confess to things as simple as sharing an umbrella or going on a trip. The show exists and does well because of its over-the-top takes on love, which turn teenage awkwardness into a fight for dominance. This slowly but surely chips away at their inflated selves to reveal the very sweet and very vulnerable love story underneath.
