Kusuriya no Hitorigoto
Kusuriya no Hitorigoto turns the imperial court drama script on its head by replacing love with forensic investigation and giving us a main character who is more interested in poisons than princes. Maomao is a practical apothecary who is taken to the Inner Palace as a servant. She plans to keep her head down and finish her contract. But when she can't help but solve a medical mystery that could hurt the Emperor's heirs, she gets pulled deeper into court intrigue even though she doesn't care about any of it. What makes her so amazing is that she doesn't care at all about the glamorous world around her. While everyone else is trying to get power and the Emperor's favor, she's just listing symptoms and studying toxins with a scientific mind. The show is like a period mystery show where political plots are solved with medical knowledge instead of sword fights. Her relationship with Jinshi, the annoyingly beautiful "eunuch" trying to keep her in line, adds comedic tension because she doesn't care about his looks even though he clearly cares about her.
