Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei changes the magic school genre by showing that spellcasting is not a mystical art but a strict field of physics and software engineering. In the story, magic is a common technology in the future, and students are harshly split into "Blooms" (the best) and "Weeds" (the worst). Tatsuya Shiba is the "irregular" in the title. He is a student who is put in the lower class because his practical scores are low, even though he has the combat skills of a strategic-class military weapon and the mind of a genius engineer. The hero's struggle to grow isn't what makes it exciting; it's the pleasure of watching a calm, logical god-tier operator take down arrogant aristocrats and terrorists one by one using better logic and magical coding.
