Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records
Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records takes the well-known "magic academy" trope and gives it new life by making the main character hate his job so much. The main character is Glenn Radars, a substitute teacher who is first shown to be the worst teacher ever. He writes "self-study" on the board so he can sleep, has no motivation, and is easily bullied by his students, especially the serious Sistine Fibel. But the series turns this incompetence on its head by showing that Glenn is a bitter former elite assassin who has lost faith in the very idea of spellcasting. The appeal comes from the moment when he stops being apathetic. Unlike traditional mages who rely on power and complexity, Glenn uses his special ability, "The Fool's World," to completely cancel out magic. He teaches his students that knowing the basic theory behind a spell is much more dangerous than just memorizing the incantation.
