Hiro
Darling in the FranXX
Darling in the FranXX is a very controversial mecha show that uses giant robots as a clear metaphor for growing up and being close to someone. In a sterile dystopia where kids are raised to pilot mechs in male-female pairs—yes, the piloting process is designed to feel uncomfortably sexual—it's basically adolescence as a way to stay alive. The main characters are Hiro, a once-great pilot who has lost his spark, and Zero Two, a half-human girl with horns who is known for killing her partners. The "Partner Killer" is what people call her because none of her co-pilots live through more than three rides. There are big, flashy fights against these monsters called Klaxosaurs, but the real story is about how to stay human in a world where all emotions have been engineered out of existence. The show uses the image of a "one-winged bird" a lot. It's about two broken people who can only fly when they lean on each other.
